Awards: BD Awards 2019 shortlisted for the category “Individual House”
The private client commissioned the design of a new build 5 bedroom family home on a 100h plot of rural land with views to the Northumberland landscape and the North Sea coastline.
Surrounded by vast farm land, a few farm houses and industrial barns, the design draws reference from these simple structures and materials while making the most of the surrounding views. This lead to the communal, private and guest rooms being arranged in two volumes over two storeys with a glass link housing the entrance area and staircase.
The proposed simple architectural form and the rural location suited the house to be built as a prefabricated insulated panel structure, providing a high level of insulation and air tightness, which in return allowed bigger areas of glazing to frame the landscape. The superstructure is finished in natural zinc and Siberian larch cladding inspired by the industrial barns and farmhouse outbuildings.
To assist the home being energy self-sufficient the building is fitted with a heat exchange system which is run by a wind turbine and also connected to a ‘package treatment plant’ for soil waste.
